Missionaries serving under the “Great Commission” of Jesus (Matthew 28:18-20) face constant discouragements, sometimes wondering if they are “doing any good.”
Missionaries … and missionary supporters … should hear “The Solomon Kendagor story”… in Solomon’s own words … and be encouraged!
Download
In this brief radio story, native Kenyan Dr. Kendagor tells of the missionary who, in the early 1900’s, shared the Good News of Jesus with his great uncle (later killed by a leopard)… and led him to saving faith in Christ. That great uncle told the story to Solomon’s father, who also received Christ in saving faith.
Solomon’s father was soon called of God into the Gospel ministry … and “planted” (began) more than 250 churches in Kenya. As of this writing, he is still living at more than 100 years of age (with no birth certificate, they are not sure… exactly.) Each of his eleven children came to faith in Christ, each receiving a Christian education, and each going into Christian ministry. They adopted and raised other additional children.
For many years, Solomon and Ruby Kendagor have continued to direct the St. Louis International Students, Inc. (ISI) ministry, reaching out to the “mission field” of thousands of students that have come from around the world to study in the St. Louis area. See http://www.isionline.org/AboutISI/WhereisISI/MO.aspx.
It is reported that, of every four international students who study in the United States, one of them becomes a national leader in his/her homeland.
Of additional special interest:
A few years ago Dr. Kendagor was asked to conduct a Saturday evening live radio broadcast, done then by his cellphone, transmitted through Washington, D. C. and aired “live” on Sunday morning in Kenya. The broadcast went so well that he was invited to continue doing the broadcast weekly. It is a two-hour program that includes a panel of 5 or 6 participants. Solomon serves as host, opening by sharing from the Scriptures, leading in prayer, and, during the discussion, providing Biblical perspective of the issues. For years now this wonderful “open door” of ministry is heard in Kenya every Sunday morning by an estimated listening audience of 5,000,000 people!
More recently a camera was set up in the Kendagor home that records the program which is later aired on Kenyan television.
This media ministry continues to expand. Solomon has now begun additional TV recording in the Swahili, a language understood by all in Kenya … and now is heard and seen by even more throughout Kenya … and “spilling over” into neighboring countries.
(Appreciation is expressed to Dr. Eli Rop and his associates in Kenya, making possible Dr. Kendagor being broadcasts on Kenya television, aired in the Swahili language. Past radio I did with Dr. Rop when he was in St. Louis, titled “Eli Rop, Teddy Kamau; Kenyan TV, radio broadcasters of Good News in Kenya; thankful for missionaries” … can be accessed for anytime listening by clicking on http://haroldhendrick.com/content/view/324/5/.)
God is to be praised for this whole, wonderful story of the power of and work of God at work through one missionary, obedient to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ … who may well have wondered at the time if he was really “doing any good!”
The married love of Solomon and Ruby (a native of Trinidad) remains fresh and full of joy. In that joy, Ruby affectionately calls her husband “King Solomon,” and Solomon calls her “Queen Ruby!”
