As a young man, Jim Talent had become serious about seeking God. Since there were absolutes in life, those absolutes must have come from somewhere, he reasoned. In his search, he began attending Bible Study Fellowship.
He regularly would listen to quality Christian radio. Once while driving into St. Louis on I-44, Jim was listening to Bott Radio Network and Dr. James Dobson in conversation with the prominent Evangelist Luis Palou. Dr. Dobson uncharacteristically said to Evangelist Palou (often known as the Hispanic Billy Graham), something like, “Luis, there are some now listening who may have come close to committing themselves to the Son of God but have never done it. Would you lead them in prayer to make that commitment?”
In his car, Jim Talent said “YES!”
Jim quickly pulled over into a public park in the Webster Grove area … and in prayer asked the Son of God to forgive him and come into his life and save him!
That was in 1989. If the very fine man, Jim Talent, has ever wavered for the purity and integrity of that moment, I have not known of it!
“For it is by grace [unmerited favor] that you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – and not of works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2: 8 – 10)
