A rich lesson from former Congressman Todd Akin that underscores the rich heritage of the United States of America. It is a great and moving story. The “Separatists” in 17th century England – who came to be known as the “Pilgrims” — in 1620 in the Mayflower departed England for the New World” to get away from the religious persecution and suppression of the King. They wanted to worship God and live out the Bible in freedom … which the King opposed.
They were headed to Virginia and would still be under the British King’s governor there. Blown off course, they approached land in the bay of Cape Cod. Realizing they were now not under the King domain, the Pilgrims – while still on the boat, before landing … wrote “The Mayflower Compact.”
For a thousand years much of the known world functioned under the domination of “the Divine right of Kings.” But the pilgrims said that they would now be the king! As stated in the Mayflower Compact, they would form themselves into a “… body politic …” They would make group decisions in place of the king.
That seed of thought that the people being the government …being the “body politic” instead of any king … was transferred into our Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution … The United States became a “Republic,” wherein the people would ultimately make governing decision through their representatives.
See the very brief “Mayflower Compact” … only about 160 words … below. (I have made Bold some words to emphasis their importance.)
The Mayflower Compact:
“‘In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, defender of the Faith, etc.
Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents, solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.’
In recent years, and as a part of previous radio with him, the great man … former Congressman Todd Akin … brought these important matters to my attention!
