Oasis International (www.oasis4refugees.org) is a St. Louis ministry to refugees from mostly war-torn countries around the world. It is located just south of a local landmark, the Bevo Mill, a Dutch-style windmill restaurant/banquet center.
Regardless of race, color, nation, or religion, all their great work is done … in Jesus Name.
Founders Mark and Joani Akers provide insightful ministry motivations: “We believe we are all refugees and that Earth truly is not our home. Our hearts long to share the love of Jesus with the international community so that through the preaching of the gospel they will become our ‘forever friends’ worshiping Jesus with us in the age to come!”
In 2016, in less than a full year, Oasis ministered to more than 1,800 people from 37 nations. Countries represented include Syria, Congo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Jordan, Sudan, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Turkey, Eritrea, Iran, and Burma.
As reported by so many, four members from one family in the Middle East each had dreams and visions of Jesus. Now they are followers and worshippers of Jesus, the Son of God and the one revealed to them in the visions.
Mark Akers delights that he is a “father figure” to some of the refugees. He recently received a card, signed, that read: “Happy Birthday, Father.”
Individuals are invited to make donations, cash and household goods, but “no junk, please!” Hotels like the Clarion and the Residence Inn, doing major remodeling, have made significant furniture donations to Oasis International and receive tax credit for those donations. Oasis gives that furniture to the refugees, providing quality living conditions … in Jesus Name!
Volunteers are needed and welcomed, but are asked to call before coming.
