It happens in the Spring and Fall of each year – two days back to back – provides four options of which the children select one of the four times. The openings are often filled to capacity.
Here’s how it works: 20 children (maximum) are assigned to one of seven groups that move together to the seven different locations of the seven selected animals. The animals featured may be different each year. A specialist with Missouri Association for Creation is at each location, providing ten minutes of explanation regarding God’s unique creation features within each animal. Five minutes are allowed for the children to move from one animal to another.
As of this writing, of the two options in the Fall of 2016, only Tuesday, September 27, is still opening. Wednesday. Sept 28 is full. Beginning times are at 9:30 am or 1:00 pm. (If you are reading this after the 2016 “Day at the Zoo” events, remember that the pattern is to continue indefinitely. www.mocreation.org will keep you updated for the next one.
It is virtually free, with a donation requested of only $5 per family (but more can be given), But reservations are required, and can be done at www.mocreation.org.
At my request, Marv tells the story I delight to hear; of the strategic role that his young son played in Marv’s life. When Mick was still a young boy, he visited a West St. Louis County church with a friend, heard the gospel, and was wonderfully impacted. Upon returning home he asked his parents why he had never heard this story before. Mark said he responded with something “profound” like: “Shut up and go to your room!” Mick prayed for his parents. After 11 years, his mom received the Lord into her life. And, after 13 years of Mick praying. Marv, at age 50, was saved! Now he is President of the Missouri Association for Creation!
In this time of radio with MAC President Marv Schaefer, he briefly discusses unique creation features of giraffes and camels.
Camels, for example, are created with more than one eyelid. With their habitats usually being in areas with much sand, the camel can at any time bring down the first eyelid … which is transparent (like goggles for humans). So the camel can move right ahead even in a full blown sandstorm.
Marv has been the zoo presenter for giraffes. For the giraffe to pump blood the six feet from his body to his head, his heart must beat “like a jackhammer!” But when he moves his head from his full height down to the ground to eat or drink, the strongly pumped blood could do him great damage … were it not for the fact that the Creator provided him valves to protect him and control the blood flow!
I am delighted that some of my grandchildren are scheduled to be a part of the next MAC Homeschool Day at the St. Louis Zoo!
Marv Schaefer is not aware of any other “Creation Day at the Zoo” efforts anywhere else in the country. Springfield, Mo, has expressed interest. He reports that the Missouri Association for Creation would be glad to be a resource and consultant in assisting other cities who would like to honor the Lord in this way … by helping others around the country do the same … or similar. The St. Louis MAC will even train and come do the first one for another city.
