Bruce Hunter, for years living in South Africa, has a vision for a large ministry project that will bring affordable housing to the Black majority there. This is additionally significant because, under the years of “Appartite,” Blacks, though the majority race, did not experience home ownership.
But, along the way, Bruce made some bad decisions in the USA. One embarrassing result, he reports is being arrested publically in Springfield, Mo, while attending his son’s high school graduation.
This radio conversation contains many interesting stories. During his time of incarceration, he was moved from prison to prison. One stay was in El Reno, Oklahoma, near my wife Joan’s home town (Weatherford, where I met her) and where I went to college (Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee).
A big international story at the time was the arrest and imprisonment of TV Evangelist, Jim Baker. What a surprise that Jim Baker and Bruce Hunter would arrive in the El Reno prison on the same day. Because the warden received threats that some inmates that they planned to kill Jim, Bruce Hunter was assigned as cellmate with Jim Baker!
In days just before this radio conversation, Bruce visited Branson, Mo, to see friends … where Jim Baker –having served his years in prison — is now back with his own cable television. Jim heard of Bruce visiting the area and had his daughter call Bruce on his way back to St. Louis. They insisted that Bruce return to Branson to spend time with Jim.
Bruce turned around near Springfield, and headed back to Branson. The reunion of the two men included Jim Baker introducing Bruce on Jim’s TV audience.
Jim Baker said on television of Bruce Hunter: “here is the man that saved my life!”
Jim even made a contribution to Bruce’s vision to provide housing … especially as a Christian witness … to the Blacks of South Africa.
Bruce was hosted in St. Louis by our mutual friend, Dr. David Claybrook (314 497-3642), who is Director of Pastoral Relations for “For His Glory” Ministries (www.forhisglorymin.org), doing extensive evangelistic and discipleship ministries, largely in Africa with the tool T4T (www.t4tonline.org).
