Jami O’Very was homeless … more than once. She’s “… been there, done that!” Now she serves on the Development Team of St. Louis, MO largest center for the homeless, the New Life Evangelistic Center, downtown at 1411 Locust Street. www.nlecstl.org
That is why Jami is passionate as a spokesperson in behalf of the homeless in the St. Louis region . She needs to be passionate … for there are efforts to close down the largest and one of the oldest centers for the homeless in the St. Louis area at the New Life Evangelistic Center. There are pressures to and within St. Louis City government to shut it down.
What would be closed? A shelter for the homeless she reports is providing 80,000 nights of shelter and care ,,, per person, per year … for the homeless. They include men, women, children, even many veterans who have offered their lives for our country … and now, at least temporarily, have “fallen on hard times.”
Jesus spoke of the poor many times, a key passage being found in the last half of Matthew chapter 25.
Even the St. Louis Post-Dispatch … regularly at odds with other Biblical teachings … has indicated compassion on this matter. In Jami Overy’s moving forward in finding support to purchase a full page ad in behalf of saving the New Life Evangelistic Center’s decades old center for the homeless. The PD has offered a purchase price for a full page they say is much lower than usual. And those of us who would help pay for it … including Joan and myself … and Sutter Presbyterian Church Pastor William McConkey (with whom Jami and I recorded radio in defense of the survival of the homeless center) … can contribute a suggested $100 each to have your name added to the list to be published in the ad.
