Lynne Jackson is Founder and President of The Dread Scott Foundation (www.thedredscottfoundation.com). The Foundation is centered in the St. Louis, MO area to recognize and honor Lynne’s great-great-grandparents – Dred and Harriet Scott — and their important role in history.
The Foundation was begun earlier in this 21st century to commemorate the150th anniversary of the infamous 1857 Dred Scott Decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. That decision basically concluded that African-Americans were something less than fully human.
That Court action helped ignite our Country’s Civil War which – sad as it was – resulted in the freeing of American slaves.
An important result of the establishment of The Dred Scott Foundation” was to “cast a vision” for creating and placing an appropriate statue of the Scotts in a prominent location in the St. Louis region. With the cooperation and support of many, that very impressive statue of the couple is now a reality. It is located on the southeast portion of the Old St. Louis Courthouse, less than one mile west of the St. Louis Arch.
The statue movingly reflects the couple’s married love. Their heads are held high in resolve, their courage displayed in focused commitment. They were history’s surge to accelerate the freedom of all slaves in the United States.
