Joy Douma Booth’s father, Harry Douma, had a vision for providing a free wholesome, healthy, spiritual, Jesus-honoring camp for inner-city children … something most of those children could not afford. He was “… obedient to the heavenly vision …” and gave “birth” to Camp Penuel which continues to bring joy to these special children and their families to this very day. The Camp’s theme, stated on their website, is Serving America's inner-city, at risk and underprivileged children since 1973.”
Remarkably, over the years the cumulative total of those attending Camp Penuel exceeds 70,000. And thousands of them have professed coming to faith in Jesus Christ while there.
Now, with her earthly father in Heaven, Joy chairs the board that oversees the Camp. Her husband, Pastor Larry Booth, serves as Executive Director and Camp Chaplain.
The majority of Penuel’s children live in or near St. Louis, MO. Beautiful pictures of happy Penuel campers and more information is available at www.camp-penuel.org.
Actually there are now three Camp Penuel locations. The one near Ironton in southeast Missouri hosts the majority of the campers.
In this radio conversation Joy reports progress on construction of a new camp dormitory that will house another 100 children each week.
Carole Douma, Harry’s devoted widow, has now written a book titled “Camp Penuel ‘God's Camp.’” Each Penuel donation of $20 or more can receive a free “thank you” copy. Read more and see a nice picture of Harry by clicking on www.camp-penuel.org/Rev-Harry-Douma.htm .
While we know that Harry Douma is full of joy and peace in Heaven, earlier brief radio with him – titled Harry Douma (1940-2011); began, led Camp Penuel; free camp, Gospel to thousands of inner-city youth — can be accessed for anytime listening by clicking on http://haroldhendrick.com/content/view/208/5/ . (In my guessing his age at the time, I think I made him a bit younger!)
Now you can hear brief radio with Joy Douma Booth … in her own words.
