For years layman Paul Kruse (rhymes with “fuse”) oversaw worship services for truckers each Sunday from 9:00 – 10:30 AM at a big truck refueling station and rest stop on Interstate 70 just west of St. Louis, at Foristell, MO. Attended by thousands of “truckers” through the years, the weekly time of group worship continues today. (Guests are welcome.)
In this process Paul learned … and was grieved … upon becoming aware that many of the homeless men who gathered there were sleeping in the woods behind the business!
No one, no group in the area … including the Salvation Army … had any provisions to these hurting, homeless men that reflected the love of God. The need was important to Paul Kruse to respond as Jesus would and wanted.
In the process Paul began what was to become the “First Step Back Home” Ministry. It became so significant and time-consuming that, he reports, God “fired” him for his home repair and construction business so that he could give all his time to addressing this great need. The authenticity of this great work of God, maintained by many prayers, volunteers and financial support — with all its various aspects of helping people in all kinds of needs — has led to widespread appreciation of it by many. It is the kind of ministry to hurting people that Jesus spoke of in Matthew chapter 25.
