In a noon prayer event in the Missouri State Capitol rotunda, encouraged by Missouri state Senators and Representatives, Democrats and Republicans, Dr. Tom Blackaby serves as speaker and prayer leader. In a similar gathering the previous year, led by Anne Graham Lotz and followed by 40 days of prayer, wonderful results of God’s answering prayer ensued. As the legislative session began, passage of a working budget during economic hard times appeared overwhelming and impossible. Thus the legislators, quietly and behind the scenes, called upon churches to pray. National Day of Prayer leaders and their associates were strategic in its planning. Intercessors quietly did “prayer walking” in the halls of the Capitol before and after the noon event, followed by 40 days of prayer. The result? The Missouri State budget was passed eight days earlier that the constitutionally required mandate … with far less wrangling and “fussing” than the officials could remember! With that in mind, the legislators requested that we again have a prayer movement in behalf of state government the following year, again including “prayer walking” and followed by 40 days of prayer. With bipartisan agreement, legislators stayed in the background so that they could not be accused of … or be tempted to … make political gain from the prayer movement. It is an amazing story of God working when His people call on him!
